Impact of Parental Substance Misuse
Aim:
To enable practitioners to better safeguard children where parental substance misuse is an issue.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course participants will:
- Understand when substance misuse becomes a child protection issue
- Understand the effect substance misuse has on parenting capacity and the short and long term effects on children
- Understand the effects different substances have in pregnancy
- Look at relevance of safeguarding procedures
- Gain confidence in undertaking risk assessments on and working with substance misusing parents
Please note that this course will not include basic awareness of drugs and their effects. Learners who do not feel confident about their knowledge in this area are advised to complete a drugs awareness course prior to attending. A free e-learning package provided by Kirklees Safer Communities Partnership is available on http://www.drugstrainingforfree.co.uk/ and is recommended.
